Document Summary
Regards imperialism as one act of balance of power. See an opportunity to grow and expand, seize it. British and french fought for control of africa. British took parts of north and south, french dominated parts of east and west. Both believed that control in africa would lead to domination of europe. Difficult for both countries due to foreign sickness and terrain. British and french failed to take over this but proved how serious both countries were about controlling africa. Lead europeans to think that what they were doing was for the better of the world. Imperialism is necessary to preserve the existing social order in the more developed countries. Needed to secure trades, markets, and to maintain employment and capital exports. Needed to maintain peace within other countries. Unsettled societies were sent to build colonies outside of the country. ie: us (pilgrims), australia (prisoners). Young men were a problem for society as they caused chaos.
