We are driven not only by the laws but also by what we believe. No violently, but live in a way that society does not accept. But completely unaware of the danger that lay outside of society. Thought values are sought in the wilderness. He was aware that our existence is heavily influenced by where he lives. Removed himself from things that conditioned him. He was not going to see the compromise. One thing he was not aware of was how useful society is that we are not really on our own. We need to view progress as not more but rather further along in his search. Mckibben- the distinguishing feature of our moment is this: better has flown a few trees over to make her nest. He believes that during this time, better and more need to be separate. We need better with out needing more. Belief in progress is hat holds us together.
