Not thought of as an illness but rather: seen as witches, seen as prophets. Placed in hospitals: nothing like current facilities, chains, tours. Dsm v (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders) handbook w/ basic organization of disorders. Diagnosis of disorders: descriptions of symptoms and behaviors, must have certain number of these symptoms = diagnosis (checklist of criteria) Problems: disorders are always evolving/changing, patie(cid:374)ts are(cid:374)"t sure of (cid:373)a(cid:374)(cid:455) s(cid:455)(cid:373)pto(cid:373)s. Must have many symptoms for at least 2 weeks. Must affect your ability to conduct your life. Other points: this combination of symptoms is very unpleasant purposeless, underwater, jet lagged. Suicide: women 3 times more likely to try pills, men 2 times more successful suicides guns. Diagnosis: must have mild symptoms for at least 2 years. Experienced depression only during times of decreased light: wintertime in ne, prevalent in alaska long winter, little light, prevalent in seattle lots of cloudy days.
