Changes in culture as an influence on cooperation and violence. Human behavior often does not match the behavior described in rational choice. Theory: but, that does not mean that there is no rationality to human social behavior , evolved social cooperative rationality . Because most people are cooperative, it is smart to be cooperative to. Surprising results for the ultimatum game in cross-cultural work : across cultures with industrialized societies, there is a lot of consistency in university student samples. Mean (average) offers of 42% to 48: in non-industrialized societies, the anthropological field work as found huge variability. Some a bit higher than college student samples, but many much lower! Motivational autonomy and violence: key idea from this class is motivational autonomy. We may have psychological propensities but these are flexible: war and murder (or other violence) are not inevitable. The data actually show huge changes in violence over time.
