PSYCH 297R Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Intrauterine Growth Restriction, Low Birth Weight, Postpartum Depression
Document Summary
Studies show that concern about residual weight gain after pregnancy is very distressing to many pregnant women. A study of 454 pregnant women revealed that 11. 5% reported a history of an eating disorder. Another study of 530 pregnant women in london found that 4. 9% scored above threshold on the eat-26. In the london study, ed symptoms were found to be associated with younger age, previous ed symptoms, lower educational level, poorer housing, employment status, and previous miscarriage. Other studies show that though pregnant women report eating more and showed less dietary restraint, they are actually less dissatisfied with their body shape. A longitudinal study of 246 women found 54 women who reported 82 pregnancies. Women with bulimia significantly decreased in ed severity during pregnancy up to 9 months postpartum. Women with anorexia also showed a significant reduction in ed symptoms during pregnancy, but returned to pre-pregnancy levels by 6 months postpartum.
