Eating disordered individuals usually are high achievement and perfectionists, the pressure of academics can trigger or exacerbate their disorder. The college atmosphere has several unique factors that may contribute to eating disorders. For many, it is the first time away from friends and family, which can be lonely. It may also be the first time that the student is responsible for their own nutrition. Snacks available in campus vending machines are often not healthy. Bust schedules and tight wallets may lead to quick, high calorie, high fat food choices. Students may gain weight when they first come to college. In dorms, students are surrounded by same sex peers which may heighten self-other comparisons. New students may be under tremendous pressure to succeed, especially if on scholarship or first-generation college goers in family.
