Expressive characteristics, characteristics associated with emotions or relationships with people; usually considered feminine. Boy"s are better at mental rotation and spatial perception than girls. Girls get better grades than boys in math classes but boys perform better on standardizes tests. Girls develop language sooner and have more verbal fluency and boys are more apt to have language and reading disorders than girls. Process by which individuals acquire the characteristics and behaviors prescribed by their culture for their sex. 3-4 years: gender identity, knowledge that one is male or female. 4-5 years: gender stability, knowledge that one"s gender does not change over time. 6-7 years: gender consistency, knowledge that inez"s gender does not change as a result of alterations in appearance, behaviors, or desires. Hormones: androgen, class of male or masculinizing hormones linked to rough and tumble behavior. Later maturity in males produces more lateralization.
