PSYCH 360 Lecture : Social Psychology
Document Summary
Social psychology lecture notes, january 24th, 2013. Social psychology is the scientific study of how an individual"s thoughts, feelings and behaviors are influenced by other people. Actions and characteristics of others affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. A stranger on a bus stares at you. Police officer signals for you to pull over. Significant other has been secretive or distant. We do a lot of thinking about others to understand them: what people are like, what people will do, why people behave as they do, how people feel about you, how people react to your behavior. Cultural norms, beliefs and values shape our social understanding. Implicit (non-conscious) processes are involved: implicit attitudes, dispositional attributions, categorization. It is important to understand where these theories and principles come from. It is useful to know something about how research is done.
