Who (world health organization) de nes health as being the state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing, not merely an absence of disease or in rmity. Illness: personal perceptions of physical symptoms that are impacted by cultural expectations. Disease: must be recognized by a clinical health provider based on a diagnosis. There are two main categories of disease: acute and chronic. Acute conditions are diagnosable, limited in time, and are treatable. Chronic conditions are treatable but not typically curable. Most of the time they are just managed. Diagnosing an illness by nding one causative agent. Being treated by strategies speci c to that agent. This model is good for bacterial infections or when pathogenic organism can be isolated. The epidemiological model looks at the interaction between agent, host, and environment. Looks at health as a positive thing, not just being neutral. It is problematic because it is one dimensional.
