Research indicates that most individuals are aware of their sexual orientation in early adolescence. Gender - social expectations (which are attached to biological distinctions) *these traits are adopted by people to signal one"s sex to others. Mostly to people of the other sex. Sex, gender, sexuality, and gender expression are all socially constructed (in meaning) They are all potentially fluid within a person(s) They need not correspond to each other mechanically. They are always fluid across time and culture. Identity - internal perception of who you are. Children aware of gender at age 2-3. Children tend to have gender identity at age 4-5. Parents tell kids who is boy and girl. Separate bathrooms, sit boy-girl-boy-girl, interactional differences while answering questions, etc. Don"t go into the boy"s bathroom, don"t cross-dress, etc. Don"t go into the girl"s bathroom, don"t cross-dress, etc. Could be broad or narrow (depending on individuals) We act with an identity linked script.
