Light is blocked: cosmic, gamma, x-ray and ultraviolet are blocked by oxygen, nitrogen and ozone (the atmosphere, infrared is blocked by water and carbon dioxide. Useful sources of light: artificial lamps, sun. Wavelengths for plant growth: most useful to plants are blue and red wavelengths, wavelengths. Incandescent bulbs: hot, inefficient only 10% of electrical energy in these lamps is given off as light. Fluorescent bulbs and lamps (or cfl: cooler, more efficient, common light bulb we use in households. High intensity: excellent efficiency and quality, expensive, electricity and gas hybrids. Sunshine is the best: plants get everything they need from sun whole spectrum of light. Properties of light affecting plants: quality wavelength and color, quantity intensity, duration length of exposure.
