STOCKSCH 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Juglans Cinerea, Heirloom Tomato, Seed Dispersal
Document Summary
What is the function of a seed: protects the young embryo, provides nutrition for the developing embryo, allows dispersal of the embryo over time and space. Wind carries seeds, seeds have certain parts that help the(cid:373) fly (da(cid:374)delio(cid:374)s have (cid:862)para(cid:272)hutes(cid:863) o(cid:374) ea(cid:272)h seed, Seeds capsules pumped full of liquid to create pressure, plant explodes and seeds disperse. Seeds beans float to mouth of river and into ocean, can come ashore and be planted. Animals with hairy coats get seeds/burrs stuck to fur and dropped elsewhere. Animals like rhinos eat seeds in forests and poop them out in open areas. Outer covering that protects seed from insects, disease, etc. Prevents water from entering seed and initiating germination before time is right (seed sprouts prematurely: embryo. Can be made up of proteins, carbohydrates or fats. Example: bean seeds: plumule is embryotic chute, radicle is embryotic root, grows downward in soil, cotyledon contains food reserves, used during early stages of germination.
