Animals like rhinos eat seeds in forests and poop them out in open areas. Outer covering that protects seed from insects, disease, etc. Prevents water from entering seed and initiating germination before time is right (seed sprouts prematurely: embryo. Can be made up of proteins, carbohydrates or fats. Example: bean seeds: plumule is embryotic chute, radicle is embryotic root, grows downward in soil, cotyledon contains food reserves, used during early stages of germination.
