Document Summary

Layers of epithelial cells attached to connective tissue layer. 1combination of an epithelial layer and an underlying connective tissue layer: cutaneous/integument, mucosal/mucous, serous/serosa. Line cavities that open to the outside. 1a gland consists of one or more cells that produce and secret a particular product called a secretion: endocrine. No ducts; endocrine glands are very vascular so hormones go directly into circulatory system: exocrine. Secretory = bottom of gland; does the secreting. Excretory = top of gland; passageway to carry secretion out: simple tubular (intestinal glands, coil tubular (sweat glands aka sudoriferous, branched tubular. Structural classification of exocrine: tubular, acinar/alveolar (little pouch) (lungs, simple acinar: has bulb/larger area in bottom, branch acinar: multiple secretory coming together to one excretory. Functional classification of exocrine: merocrine glands, holocrine glands, apocrine glands. Product moves to apex of the cell and pinches off and carries the secretion. Sweat glands: eccrine sweat glands, apocrine sweat glands.
