Homogenous product of connective tissue cells that it surrounds. Varies in terms of consistency (fluid to semi solid gel) Found embedded to various degrees in the ground substance. Determines density of tissue: areolar, adipose, reticular, loose connective tissue, dense connective tissue. Connective tissue categories: connective tissue proper, cartilage, bone (osseous, blood, collagenous regular, collagenous irregular, elastic. 1stem cells that produce both the ground substance and fibers: fibroblasts (connective tissue proper, chondroblasts (cartilage, osteoblasts (bone, hemocytoblasts/hematopoietic stem cell (blood) Most widely distributed connective tissue in the body. Surrounds blood vessels and nerves, within the fabric of mucous membranes, papillary region of the dermis. Consists of a variety of different fibers and cells: ground substance = hyaluronic acid, fibers, collagenous, elastic. Yellowish, smaller, finer, but stretches and returns back to normal.
