Lecture 2
3 other blood functions:
A) Control acid based balance pH of blood and tissue = 7.4
- As # of O2 ions increase, pH goes down
Structures
1) Protein buffers in blood pickup excess hydrogen ions and let go at good time
2) Bicarbonate ion: HCO3-
- Weak acid and hangs on to hydrogen strongly and serves as buffer
3) Kidney
4) Lungs more CO2 going out,
- If Co2 stays in body overwhelms buffer and converts water to carbonic acid
B) Immunological
- blood has leukocytes and antibodies
- plasma proteins- found in blood
- complement special protein involved in overall immunology
- interferon-
- complement and interferon proteins are found in the blood with
glucocytes
C) Ability to coagulate
-Fibrinogen (plasma protein) stays soluble until fibrinogen converted into fibrin (fibrin
forms clot)
1) hemostasis-
1) vascular spasm- arterials feeding tissues undergo massive vasoconstriction
-slows down blood flow

2) platelet plug- platelets get sticky and plug hole
3) coagulation- seals blood vessel
Vital Statistics
1) blood (8 % of body weight or 5.5 liters or 1.5 gallons)
2) blood is 5x more viscous than water result of dissolved substances
3) RBCS
- 2 million RBCs produced per second
- life span : 120 days no nucleus or synthetic organelles
Ex of synthetic organelles golgi apparatus, ribosome
- Diameter - 7.5 to 8 microns
- Thickness 2 microns
- Spectrin special blood protein
-cytoskeleton , flexible, allows blood vessels to twist and turn without cracking
- 5 million RBCs per cubic millimeter
-5.4 million males, 4.7 million females
- RBCs outnumber WBCs in blood 800 to 1 b/c WBCs go to tissues to do job
-infection? high amount of WBCs go to tissues
4) WBCs
- 5 to 11 thousand per cubic millimeters
5) Platelets
- range between 250 thousand and 500 thousand
