Leukocytes (WBCs) con’t
- Granulocytes - Granules in cytoplasm
- Neutrophils
- Stain w/ neutral die
- Most prominent wbc 50 to 60%
- Basophils
- Stain w/ basic die
- Eosinophils
- Stain with acidic die
- Agranulocytes - no granules in cytoplasm
- Monocytes
- Macrophages
- Target foreign substances
- Lymphocytes
- 2nd most prominent wbc
- 20 to 45 % of WBCs
WBC Functions
- 1) phagocytosis
- Eat and breakdown foreign material
- Ex. neutrophils , eosinophils, and monocytes/macrophages
- 2) form antibodies
- B-lymphocytes
- Produce antibodies
- Mark cells for destruction
- 3) produce toxins
- Destroy bacteria
- Produced by T-lymphocytes (thymus gland)
- Cytotoxic T-cells
WBCs found…
- Around lymphoid tissues
- Ex. lymph nodes, spleen, thymus gland
