BIOL 382 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Osteoid, Bone Marrow, Diaphysis
Document Summary
Ex. cranial bones, brain, vertebrae, spinal cord, heart, lungs, ribs, hip bones. Wbcs, rbcs, platelets start off as megalocytes. Red bone marrow is responsible for all blood cell production. Ex. phalanges of fingers and toes, tibia, fibulla, femur. Have a thin layer of compact bone. Cancellous bone is always covered by compact bone. Found in carpals (wrist) and tarsals (feet) Thin layer of compact bone; inside broader layer of cancellous bone. Found in areas of protection of soft organ or need for extensive muscle attachment. Vertebrae, ear ossicles, pelvic girdle (ilium and ischium) Bone have 3 categories of cells: osteoblasts. Immature bone cell; needed to produce osteocytes, matrix and fibers. *bone consist of living cell embedded in mineralized/organic matrix. * organic - matrix made up of organic components (osteoid) mostly collagenous fibers that are produced by cell. Mineral part of bone matrix made up of calcium ions and phosphate ions.
