Distinguishing Among Values, Morals, and Ethics

Values à Beliefs and attitudes that provide us with direction in everyday living
Ethics à pertain to the beliefs we hold about what constitutes right or wrong conduct
(represent moral principles adopted by an individual or group to provide rules for
conduct)
Morality à perspectives of right and proper comportment and involves evaluating
actions on the basis of some broader cultural context or religious standard
Values
Personal principles that aren’t right/wrong
Individually held beliefs and attitudes that guide action
Values are not the same as ethics
Client and coach have different values à as long as the goal to be healthy doesn’t
violate professionally recognized health standards, there shouldn’t be much of an issue
As wellness coaches, your values show à Must take care of body, must exercise, must
eat well
An ethical coach…
Understands and exhibits in its own behaviors the ICF standards of conduct
Understands and follows all ICF ethical guidelines
Clearly communicates the distinctions between coaching, consulting, psychotherapy,
and other support professions
Refers the client to another support professional as needed, knowing when this is
needed and the available resources
Values play a huge part in our personality and influence our outlook on life and color the way
we approach people
