EHS 150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Lean Body Mass, Stroke Volume, Cellular Respiration
Document Summary
It determines how long an individual can continue a task. Increased aerobic capacity, or vo2 max: the body"s ability using oxygen to produce energy. This enhances the ability to perform many tasks. Stress or overload causes muscle to become hypertrophy. A fit individual has greater proportion of lean body tissue than an unfit individual. Staying active may prevent loss of lean body mass due to aging. At least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily. At least 60 minutes of developmentally appropriate exercise for children daily. Maintain the target heart rate for 30 to 60 minutes. Target heart rate = 60-85% of the maximum heart rate. Maximum heart rate = 220 age. Focus on long-term and not on occasional setbacks. Generated by aerobic metabolism in the presence of oxygen. Or by anaerobic metabolism (anaerobic glycolysis) in the absence of oxygen. Protein is not a major energy source, but the body does use small amounts of amino acids for energy.
