- Person’s sense of identity based on their emotional, romantic and/or sexual attractions
- Heterosexual. Homosexual, bisexual, asexual
Biological sex
- Not strictly male/female
- Includes intersex people
Intersex
- Person born w/ reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not seem to fit typical
definition of male or female
Sociology of sexualities
- Studying sexuality includes sexual orientation, biological sex, and gender identity

Functionalist perspective
- Heterosexual family is how society identifies legitimate kinship and familial obligations
- Society defines all forms of sexuality and families that don’t fit ideal image are
problematic
