Examples of types of families studied by sociologists
- Families of origin
- Extended family
- family in which relatives - such as grandparents, aunts, uncles live in
same home as parents and their children
- Nuclear families
- married couple and unmarried children live together
- by 2000, only ⅓ of US families fit in this description
- Families of choice
- intimacy ties, care and support that are chosen rather than fixed

Kinship
- state of being related to others
- societies determine kinship by 1 of 3 ways
- Bilateral descent
- kinship system in which both sides of person’s family are regarded as
equally important
- Patrilineal descent
- system in which father’s relatives are significant
- Matrilineal
- system in which mother’s relatives are significant
Family
- set of people related by blood, marriage, or some other agreed-upon relationship, or
adoption who share primary responsibility for reproduction and caring for members of
society
although they vary in form, families are cultural universals
