The us is consuming about the same amount of steel, aluminum, plastics, and cement as the entirety of western europe. Both consume way more than the developing world. Over time the percent of global consumption of most raw materials has decreased due to advances in developing countries (ex. Same with the us: a lot due to developing countries building infrastructure themselves. Not consuming less materials, just when compared to the rest of the world the percentage being consumed is nearing the average. China is consuming about half of the world"s cement due to increase in development and population. China"s gdp will continue to grow until it surpasses the us, with india coming close to the us"s gdp (projected in 2050) Competition for world"s raw materials is already gaining momentum. In ~2012, the us was unable to import cement because china had already bought what was available. Us is a net importer of most raw materials:
