If , means that u1 does not affect y1 directly --> bad choice for control. If --> interaction exists stronger for smaller lambda. If --> interaction reverses the sign of the gain --> bad choice for control. Relative gain array rows correspond to y1 and y2 columns correspond to u1 and u2 only need to know one relative gain for example, if we knew. General rule: pair inputs/outputs such that lambda is positive and as close to 1 as possible.
