Document Summary
Pairs of competitors, mutualists, predators, prey do not interact in isolation. Dna/dt = (di growth of a)[ka - (intraspecific feed back) - (interspecific feedback) / ka] A 2 species system requires 2 experimental treatments. 3+ species models have direct and indirect components. Indirect interactions may diffuse competition and create mutualisms. Differences in habitat preferences permit the coexistence of the species. Since the introduction of the snowshoe hare, the arctic hare has contracted its habitat and is now found only near boulder fields in the tundra. Introduction of an abundant, alternative food source - the snowshoe hare - increase the density of the lynx which ate the arctic hare out of its former habitat. One hare may have excluded the other by means of a predator feeding on both. Both species, when reared without the other moth species, persist with the wasp. One species is driven to extinction when the other boost the parasitoid wasp population.
