Zika virus - spread mostly by the bite of an infected mosquito. Infection during pregnancy can cause certain birth defects. Can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. There is no vaccination or medicine for zika. Local mosquito borne zika transmission has been reported in the us. Heavy rain and warm temperatures help mosquitoes carrying zika thrive. Drought can also help mosquitoes when humans store water in accessible places. Microparasites - generally too small to be seen with the naked eye. Complete a full life cycle within one host and can be transmitted directly to conspecifics (and sometimes heterospecifics) Koch s postulates: 4 criteria to demonstrate that a disease is caused by a particular agent. The specific agent must be associated with every case of the disease. The agent must be isolated from a disease host and grown in culture.
