Interest group (for our purposes): formal, organized associaions that seek to inluence the government, but do not seek to control it formally (party). Mobilizaion: people organizing together to achieve a poliical purpose: the roots of associaions. Popular sovereignty: the ulimate authority to rule within a polity lies with the people. Represent: ( to present again): to take acions and speak on behalf of another. Trustee view of representaion: the representaive"s job is to act on behalf of the public interest, or to consider the best interests of the enire community. Substanive representaion: acing on behalf of the interests of those that one represents. Descripive representaion: one"s ascripive traits or idenity corresponds with those that one represents, or that of the community. Informal, paricipatory associaion is embedded in american culture. Poliical associaions compensate for the tyranny of the majority and the failures of representaion. The consituionally-protected rights ensure the right of minoriies to engage poliically.
