Trying to understand the nature of consciousness, awareness, creature with a sense of world and of itself. Many previous philosophers saw consciousness as a thing . Consciousness is an activity, not a thing located inside of us. Both relational and dynamic - between myself and the world. Have of something (way of relating to the world) - relationship. Each distinct and valuable; we confirm each other"s distinctiveness and value. Both distinct: what we have in common - basis for mutual recognition. The lived experience of the black man (chp 5 of black skin white masks) Trying to accomplish two things: abstract, philosophical and concrete political intervention; dialectics (whose biggest shaper is hegel; finding, discussing, investigating truth in opinions, also metaphysics) An explanation of hegel"s dialectical consciousness theory and an attempt to politicize it. Hegel"s struggle relationship uses idea of lord and serf/indentured servant. Fanon points to real historical relationships - they don"t just transform into equals.
