PSY 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Eugenics
Document Summary
The sources of psychological traits: gene networks, environment, parents, economic, siblings, education. The nature-nurture debate: francis galton (1876, "there is no escaping from the conclusion that nature prevails e(cid:374)or(cid:373)ously over (cid:374)urture , can up with the idea to use twins for study. Eugenics: science that seeks to promote genetic/biological improvement of human society by influencing who does and does not reproduce: widely supported. Adoption studies: adopted siblings are genetically unrelated individuals who were reared together, share zero genetic variation, yet share 100% of rearing environment. Jim lewis and jim springer first met at age 39: both were 6" and 180 lbs, both had been married twice. Origins of individual differences in behavior: twin and adoption studies tell us genetics is important, twin and adoption studies also tell us the environment is important, but shared rearing environment does not contribute much to similarity.
