PSY 3711 Lecture 22: 22. Age and Expertise 12.4.2018
Document Summary
Age-related declines in certain basic abilities lead to worse performance. Reduction in amount of deliberate practice with age. Need to identify what people will be specializing in. Lead to development of programs that permit appropriate training and practice across many different domains. Stages of skill acquisition: cognitive: trying to understand the task, associative: becomes a bit more automatic, automated: completely automatic. Literature has argued for limited evidence of talent across: chess master, medical doctor, typist, mathematics, athlete. Many are rule-bound activities: finite set of rules. They work towards a common goal and share responsibility for outcomes. Groups include members who may work together or may just share some resources. Why teams: time-efficient, sequential vs. concurrent tasks. Innovation and creativity: diversity of training and perspectives, better information processing, higher cognitive thresholds vs. individuals, more adaptable, sometimes can"t do without teams. Input-process-output model: enables understanding of how teams perform and how to maximize performance.
