Neurological system: the electrical system for the body, tells the body what to do, central nervous system (cns) Brain & spinal cord: peripheral nervous system. Stroke = cerebrovascular accident (cva: disrupion in blood supply to the brain, brain atack (v. heart atack, 3rd most common cause of death in us, 85% are caused by a blood clot or some kind of blockage. Medical management = clot-buster drugs: 15% are caused by a bleed in the brain. Most important thing is to get them up & moving soon ater the stroke! Afected side of the body: range of moion prevent contractures, strengthening, motor control / motor learning, trying to wake up or make new connecions (neural plasicity) Big focus on mobility: bed mobility, transfers, siing balance, standing balance, ambulaion (walking, advanced mobility tasks. Pt focus: prom, end range stretches, coma simulaion, transfers bed chair, posiioning, signiicant focus on family & caregiver educaion. Damage to the spinal cord: trauma leading cause.
