Purpose of the nicu: promote infant survival, optimize long-term health, optimize long-term development, promote role of parents and infants in co-regulation. Nursery care levels: level i routine care of the well baby and family, level ii special care for the low-risk baby and family. Ii a do not provide mechanical ventilation or cpap. Iii c can provide extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ecmo) and complex surgical intervention, such as repair of serious cardiac defects.
