Repression: the removal of unacceptable thoughts or emotions to the unconscious. eg. abused kid that cannot remember the abuse in later years. According to freud, personality is shaped by ones ability to gratify the libido. Either too much or too little grati cation will alter an indvls personality later in life. Fixation: a part of the libido remains attached to a spc. part of the body. Fixation patterns: overly strict toilet training = anal- repulsive personality, overly lax=anal-retentive: phallic stage: 4-5 libido attached to genitals, sources of grati cation: masturbation.
