Document Summary

Synthesis of simple sugars (monosaccharides) from co2 and h2o using light energy. As wavelength increases energy increases: light = Electromagnetic radiation (=e) which travels as discrete packets (photons) or waves: visible light. What color of light penetrates ocean depths? blue. What color is seaweed in these depths? red, they absorb blue for photosynthesis so they re ect red: pigments = Pigments absorb certain wavelengths and re ect, and transmit others. Objects color= wavelengths re ected and transmitted (if light can pass through) Chloroplast= double membrane sac containing pigments and biochemical reactions of photosynthesis. Thylakoids= uid lled sacs within chloroplasts whose membranes contain embedded photosynthetic pigments. Stroma= uid contents surrounding thylakoids: chlorophyll a = Only pigment in chloroplasts which can directly capture light energy and use it to start photosynthetic reactions. The absorbed energy is transferred to chl. a. Chlorophyll b= 25% of chlorophyll in leaves absorbs blue-green and orange re ects yellow-green.
