Bios 111 disease of the day - meningitis lecture 20 (2/27/17) Separated by blood by blood brain barrier. The immune system doesn"t work in the csf. If bacteria get in the fluid, it used to be 100% chance of death. Mostly bacterial, but there are some viral, fungal, and protozoal. Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming, pleomorphic with capsules. Type b allows the bacteria to get in the csf and be virulent. Csf is connected to the blood in a way. Makes for difficulty because antibiotics can"t cross the barrier. 3rd generation cephalosporin is so hydrophobic it can cross the barrier. Most bacteria capsules are polysaccharides, however in this case it"s a heavily phosphorylated polyribitol. Haemophilus influenzae, streptococcus pneumoniae, and neisseria meningitidis. Hib dropped 99% between 1985 and 1995. Same bacteria that cause pneumonia cause meningitis, so the vaccines and treatment are the same and effective for both. First thing done if suspected is to treat it with antibiotics.
