Document Summary

The digestive tract (gi tract, gastrointestinal tract) is open at both ends. Accessory organs include the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Accessory organs secrete material to help aide in digestion. Digestion breaks down food particles to a size that can be absorbed. Absorption takes nutrients from the lumen of the gi tract into the body. Secretion of enzymes, water & acid for digestion. Motility, contraction of smooth muscle to move material through the gi tract. Food becomes chyme (food with various secretions) as gastric contractions mix the blus with gastric secretions. Most digestion & absorption of nutrients occurs in the small intestine. Mechanical digestion increase surface area of foods & mixes food with saliva. Salivary immunoglobulin: an antibody that reduces ability of bacteria to bind tissues, first place where bacteria is found.
