Document Summary
10 year old child who is very ugly and has yellowish skin because of illness. Lives in india in the beginning of the novel. Her parents do not love her and her mother (who is beautiful and elegant) hired. Indian servants just to keep her away from her. Servants are told to give mary whatever she wants to keep her away from her parents so she becomes incredibly selfish. Cholera epidemic breaks out; can"t get out to avoid it because mrs. lennox wants to stay for a dinner party. Mary"s nanny (ayah) does not come so she wanders into the garden. Mary is upset that she is forgotten because of the chaos; storms back to her room, drinks wine, and falls asleep. Awakes to a small green snake and is alone taken by british soldiers. Sent to live with an english clergyman; she does not like his other 5 children and they do not like her (make fun of her)
