PSYC 181 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Authoritarianism, Corporal Punishment, Midlife Crisis
Document Summary
Parent/ child interactions: like counting to three to stop the behavior. Baumrind"s parenting styles: good relationship with parent: children usually reflect their parent"s parenting style, bad relationship: children do not want to emulate their parents. Authoritarian: not super warm, not hands on: authoritarianism: really strict rules. But it teaches them to follow the rules if they feel like they can"t get away with it, most likely to be a bully because they see that those who are the strongest get to make the rules. Permissive: warm, caring, wants to be friends and closely involved: the child has a great deal of control. They might try to set rules, but soon forget the rules: child outcomes: the kids will do wacky, grades tend to suffer (but might ask why the student got a bad grade on his test) Authoritative: high warmth, and in control of the relationship: one in which the parents set reasonable rules.
