Template: a pattern treated as an unanalyzed whole. Pattern in recognized by degree of overlap between sensory info and template. Doesn"t describe how patterns differ (only that they do ex: barcode doesn"t scan. It tells you it doesn"t work but not why) Can"t handle multiple interpretations (8-10 meanings of jam) This is what we did when we were little- this is how you develop patterns- but now we do it automatically. Easier when its with curved letters, harder with letters with straight lines because of features in context. Bottoms up: bank- black on white background, features form letters, letters form words, words have meaning.
