1603: izumo no okuni and her troupe of female dancers seek to entertain in the streets. It is wild, bawdy and accessible compared to noh. 1629: after a lush, licentious society has sprung up around kabuki, women are banned. In the next generation, teenaged boys will also be banned. The need for the onnagata is born. A male who performs a female role. Not supposed to act like a real woman, he is the ideal fantasy of femininity. Yaro-kabuki refers to the adult male style. Kabuki is now translated as sing, dance, skill but the skill was sanitized about. About 1670 until the mid 1800s, the style, performance values and look ok kabuki become set. ****they do not use masks, they use elaborate makeup. Generational system is intact, the same as noh. Some characters have a roppo, a stylized exit with elaborate hand/foot gesture.
