Document Summary

Ambivalence-the state of having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something or someone. This is a normal and predictable part of the change process. The counselor"s role is to get a client to think about changing, thoroughly explore this idea, and facilitate the resolution of this. The goal is to help the client get to the next stage. Persistent client resistance is not a problem of the client, but one of the counselor"s skill. When in a session the counselor must look for physical signs that go along with what the client is saying. Sometimes what they are saying and how they are portraying that do not match up. Models of addiction (pg 38 in text) These models are the lens that people view addiction through. Continuity of care, inclusion of the family, community and peers in the process; individualized and comprehensive services across the lifespan, community anchored services, and experiences of recovering individuals.
