Review 1946- 1962: cooking demonstration, local, live, unscripted, home economists. 1963-1992: national broadcasts (usually pbs) at night, tie-in to cookbooks, more working women, rise of cooking as creative expression, leisure activity, hobby, gourmet cooking, tv personalities rather than home economists. Constraints of production: first black & white, then color, limited camera movement (static camera, host facing camera, often no editing, no retakes. Constraints of reception: home viewer only had approx. 7-8 stations: no remote control to easily change channel, tv viewing organized around individual show , not flow of images. Justin wilson (slow pace on cooking show: combines how-to cooking show with storytelling, vivid personality, fills in gaps of cooking time with humor and stories, tie-in to several cookbooks, cooking without fear of nutritional value. Jeff smith: the frugal gourmet (italian, more professorial in presentation (sometimes seen as patronizing, routinely had 15 million viewers, fine dining and gourmet living on a budget, tie-in to cookbooks.
