19 views2 pages

Document Summary

Shoot apical meristem originally makes vegetative organs: leaves, stem, buds. Then moves to reproductive organs: sepals, petals, stamens, carpels. What causes the transition to move from vegetative to reproductive: flowering is not only a required step to complete a sexual life cycle, perennials-plants that flower year after year, angiosperms grow vegetatively, then reproductively, then die. Some do this in just one year, annuals. Difference is that biennials require chilling period before they can flower. What makes the sam convert from vegetative to reproductive: 2 signals: Being annual is more advantageous than being perennial. Aka amount of time the plant has been growing, just naturally happens. Seed germinates and then are incapable of flowering. Length of day photoperiodism to flower: once the days get to a certain length, then they switch, production of flowers is staggered throughout the season, based on the flower, seasonal variation in producing flowers, types of photoperiodic plants: Short day plants-sdp- flower when days are short.
