Osmotic balance and fluids, eliminate nitrogenous waste and other compounds, ph balance of fluids, volume of fluids. Diversity of excretory system: first developed in flatworm. Contain tubules, flame cells with cilia and excretory pore. They excrete their wastes but it is highly diluted with water, which is good because they just uptake their wastes (mostly urine: metanephridia (earthworm)- Nephrostome with ciliated funnel, tubules and exit pore; funnel draws material into filter. Blood containing waste is dumped into coelom them dumped into tubules. Their urine is dilated too, not as diluted: malphigian tubules (spiders) Then water flows in by osmosis, and during this process water and ions are reabsorbed. Which makes it useful in relatively dry environments: kidney (vertebrates) Functional unit is nephron, filtration is in bowman"s capsule. Material is dumped out of glomerilious into bowmans capsule, then filtered, then reabsorbed for amino acids and sugars, then the renal tubules modifies solution more, then it gets dumped.
