CLSA 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Enkidu, Humbaba, Heroon
Document Summary
Hero: a noble figure, long dead, and worshipped as a power dwelling beneath the earth. These tombs were placed in conspicuous locations and resembled enormous earthen mounds. The epic of gilgamesh, one of the oldest cycles of stories in the world. Gilgamesh seems to have been a historical figure, a king of the sumerian city. He must have lived around 2600 bc (quotes slide 4) Gilgamesh was two-thirds divine and one-third mortal. He became the king of uruk but abused his power. He overcame all who challenged him and he slept with every virgin before their wedding. The people of uruk could take it no longer, prayed to the gods, and they fashioned enkidu. Gilgamesh orders a trapper to take a whore and ambush enkidu. For 6 days and 7 nights enkidu makes love to her: enkidu was lessened, he could not run so fast.
