Credibility: Support for a claim that is developed by the decision makers' perception that the arguer
reveals competence, trustworthiness, good will, and dynamism. [RSP 142]
• Politicians depend heavily on credibility to support their claims
• Politician focused on health care, he is a cardiovascular doctor- they are very qualified
• Parent- if they can keep their kids safe and healthy
Competency: A person is perceived to have qualities of wisdom, sagacity, reliability, authoritativeness,
expertise, qualification [RSP 142]
• Former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton wants to be perceived as a smart, practical, and experienced
person
• Hilary Clinton on mass incarceration- Hilary Clinton emphasizes the governmental policy details that would
try to end mass incarceration while improving criminal justice
Trustworthiness: A person is perceived as having qualities of virtue, probity, character, conscience,
honesty, and sincerity [RSP 143]
• Senator Bernie Sanders conducts himself as a person who is consistent, speaks from is heart and asks
tough questions
• Bernie sanders on mass incarceration- Bernie Sanders makes a moral plea to reduce violence to people
that are connected to mass incarceration

Good will: A person is perceived as having the qualities of open-mindedness, objectivity, impartiality,

• Businessman and now President Donald Trump says that only he has the energy and experience to make
America great again
• Donald Trump on mass incarceration- Donald Trump says that making America great again requires
toughness against crime, gangs and drugs, which he equates with more policing, and more imprisonment
and deportation
• Malcom X- forceful with his style of speaking
• Jimmy Fallon- enthusiasm
• Hitler- he made his country try and take over the world- very dynamic, foreful, ispiratioal- he had
many followers
