Remember: use trends are closely related to public perceptions of use norms . Perceptions of deviance shape both use and attempts to control use. Different drugs pop up at different times. We do not track their use until they pop up and draw attention to themselves. Because drugs have been available in a wide variety of spaces and methods, it"s hard to track them in one cohesive space. Alcohol is the easiest trend to follow. For much of its history, consumption has been legal and relatively regulated. Important to note: sales and consumption are not the same thing. Trends in alcohol use and drug use tend to move together. During colonial times, there was a lot of alcohol consumption. Growing popularity in the 1600s and 1700s. Notion that alcohol was necessary for health. First efforts to temper the use of alcohol. Temperance movement - a social movement that urges personal moderation. See some fluctuation as this temperance movement gains momentum.
