What about motivation???
• Self determination theory- humans needs...
o Autonomy- to feel in control of their decision, pressure minimized, initiates
actions on own reason
o Competence- skilled, clear and realistic expectations, positive feedback
o Relatedness- emotional support, interest and empathy
o If one of these is not met, then it is not the best motivated

External regulation- extrinsic motivation, outside of the task, want to avoid a punishment, external
pressures (rewards and punishments)
Further we go right, it is more self determined
Develop and select programs that offer:
• Autonomy
o control=decisions
o When, where, how ,type
• Competence
o Allow for skill development
o Classes-allow for varying levels of expertise
• Relatedness
o Active with people we want to spend time with
o Support for our efforts
o Related to important aspects of our life
Individually Adapted health behavior change (social and behavioral approach)
• Strategies- teach behavioral skills to help participants incorporate PA into their daily routine
o Tailored- specific interests, preference, stage of readiness
• Individual behavioral change
o Successful programs include:
▪ Goal setting or monitoring
▪ Building social support for new behaviors
▪ Behavioral reinforcement through self rewards and positive self talk
