PHIL 1033 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Existence Precedes Essence, Nanny, Jean-Paul Sartre
Document Summary
If we don"t express our freedom as we should we are missing out no limits to what we can be or do! Sometimes we want to do something but we don"t then we regret it. Spend too much time in our own head. Certainty is not to be had about the outside world but the certainty of our inner thoughts is what we should believe in, we have a sense of control over our actions. Man is nothing else but what he makes of himself (293). Rocks are rocks they cant change into something else but we have the freedom to choose who and what we are. There is no determinism, man is free, man is freedom (296; also 302). We can"t escape our freedom; but we get to determine who and what we are! If we tried to not be free we would be using our freedom to choose that.
