Why are second order so important: the option to make us have a desire, to make us humans, self-knowledge, to create ethical system. So we can make ethical deliberations unique to people. We want to line our desires with values. Frank thinks second order desires help line up desires with values. Has value for environment and wish had desire to help with environment: want second order of wishing to want to be pushed into first order and then have it dovetail with values. Have desire, series of actions, and complete desire. Scone on the plate, coffee, scone is dry. Contemplating to eat the scone- wait till lunch.
