Document Summary
Phil 1033 4. 18. 18: brief review, epictetus says that every time someone does something, they are doing it from their persepective. 48, 49, 53: appreciate when others can"t be stoical, but don"t get caught up in things yourself (sect. 26) and absolutely nothing bad can happen (27): pleasure at seeing how things fit together . Extreme epictetus: don"t have desires or attachments at all, minimize them, accept how the world goes, total detachment. Moderate epictetus: have desires and goals just know what you are getting into, be connected to others but know what you are getting into, don"t get upset when things run counter to plan. It is impossible to do: we can try but we are going to love the things that we care about. Ex. family, friends, pets: extreme epictetus: be ok with however things turn out for me, we are expected to be okay with everything that happens to us, no matter how unfair it is.
